St Michaels Mount
St Michaels Mount Causeway

St Michaels Mount lies just off the Cornish coast, in Mounts Bay, Marazion. The stunning island houses a magnificent fairy tale castle, full of myths and legends, where visitors can marvel at the treasures within, and relive the history of this amazing fortress. Throughout history the castle has survived many battles, and since 1954 St. Michaels Mount has been owned and cared for by the National Trust. It is now one of Cornwall's best kept and well visited sites.

The island can be reached on foot at low tide via an ancient causeway, or by boat into the pretty harbour at high tide. Legend has it that there was once a giant who walked the causeway, but it was certainly used by pilgrims in medieval times.

Once on shore the atmospheric castle, which is open to the public, has fantastic displays of fascinating relics dating back as far as the Bronze Age. There are magnificent rooms decorated with ornate furnishings and richly painted panels. Views from the castle gardens stretch for miles over the breathtaking coastline and countryside beyond. Outside the steeply terraced gardens are a treat to behold, bursting with shape and resplendent colour and housing a vast collection of exotic and sub tropical plants and flowers, many of which are on sale in the plant shop. In the village below and around the harbour there are clusters of delightful cottages which are home to the local village folk, most of whom live and work on the island like generations before them.

The surrounding crystal clear waters are populated by seals, dolphins and a wealth of marine plants and sea creatures. The island itself is buzzing with wildlife and climbing up to the hill top there are many species of wild flowers and plants to be discovered. In the village there are a number of shops and eateries where visitors can while away a few hours and watch the comings and goings of everyday life, whilst taking in this unique island...
